Utility increases – don’t be afraid of change this winter!

With the ‘Big Six’ energy firms likely to increase their charges by as much as £120 on an annual basis, many people in the UK will be worried about the cost of their gas and electricity bills as winter creeps ever closer.

However, according to leading price comparison site Moneysupermarket.com, there are steps that can be taken to ensure you are not paying more than you should for utilities. Moneysupermarket's consumer expert, Claire Francis, has spoken out, suggesting homeowners and tenants should be switching their supplier whenever possible to make sure they are securing the best deal and a tariff that works for them.

According to the comparison site, as many as 12.6 million households failed to switch supplier after the last round of price hikes, which has left them paying a collective £2 billion too much for their bills. The next set of increases from the Big Six could see an additional £1.4 billion added to this national bill.

Ms Francis is urging Brits to take action: "The time to act is now. Don't wait for the first price increase announcement to be made because by that time some of the tariffs currently available could have been withdrawn from sale and replaced with more expensive deals."

One suggestion is to look into arranging fixed prices for a set amount of time with the utility supplier, as this will protect the household for the duration against the ever-rising prices.

At Lemontree, our tenants have the choice to continue with the previous supplier or switch provider. We strictly follow the Ofgem guidelines that state anyone who is fully responsible for paying their bills has the right to choose which company they use at all times.
